Olympic late nights

My blog has been neglected this week…actually, I enjoy looking at that sweet baby face so much that I just couldn’t bear to push it further down the page!

Well…that may be true, but I’ve been behind in sooo many things lately.  And staying up waaay too late.  It will be a miracle if I feel caught up by the end of August.

I blame the Olympics…

…which I thoroughly enjoy!

Some favorite moments so far:

  • Opening Ceremonies!
  • USA men’s gymnastics winning the bronze…it may as well have been the gold.
  • Michael Phelps winning gold and setting a world record (or helping to set a world record) in his first final…and his second…and his third…and his fourth…and his fifth.  Wowza!
  • Seeing the pride, joy and relief on Phelps’ mother’s face.
  • Bela Karolyi talking about women’s gymnastics.
  • USA men’s swimming 4×100 freestyle relay victory!
  • The USA vs China men’s basketball game.
  • China’s men’s gymnastic victories.
  • Hearing about all the hard work and sacrifices and adversity that is overcome by so many of the athletes.
  • Watching Ethan’s enthusiasm, for pretty much every sport.
  • Can’t wait for track and field to start!

More late nights to come…

finale SYTYCD

Wednesday’s show had me exhausted just watching them…the final four had to cram in so much for the final two hours!  How could they keep all those routines straight in their heads, let alone make their bodies cooperate?  Amazing!

I would be willing to bet that of all the reality shows, So You Think You Can Dance has the best finale!  It was so fun to see some of the best dances from the season again, some new dances, and of course, the winners.  How terrific that they surprised Katee with $50k for being the top girl.  She certainly was the top girl.  So many of the best dances this year had her in them.  I figured it would come down to Joshua and Twitch, and I had myself convinced Twitch would win, right up until they were both standing there with their hands in front of their mouths, waiting the announcement, and I suddenly thought, “No, Joshua’s got it.”  What an amazing athlete he is, and I think he deserved it for being so well rounded.  The whole bunch seems like they are genuinely nice people and supportive of each other, which makes watching them enjoyable.  This show will stay on my list for next summer.  Now, it’s on to the Olympics!

Olympics countdown!

6 Days ’till Opening Ceremonies!  Yippee! And how cool it will be to view them with a DVR this year…rewind and fast forward…rewind and fast forward…to my finger’s content…if I get the remote!

I finally finished The Flying Scotsman, which is about Eric Liddell (think Chariots of Fire).  (see previous post)  It was very inspiring to read about his life, especially as we enter a new Olympic stage, set in the country of his birth, missionary service and death.

Yesterday, I received my latest edition of Runner’s World magazine.  It features an article about marathoner Ryan Hall, who has been very open about his faith.  I especially appreciated this quote from him, telling of a turning point in his life:  “I was no longer a runner who happens to be a Christian.  I was a Christian who happens to run.”  This exciting runner will be on my list of must-sees for this Olympics!

This got me thinking of other athletes I look forward to watching, specifically Christian athletes.  I thought of Laura Wilkinson, the platform diver.  Allyson Felix, the 200 meter specialist.  I know there are lots of others, and I look forward to watching all the athletes in as many events as possible!  Anybody care to share whom or what they look forward to watching?

dancing show

SYTYCD…I was surprised that Courtney beat out Chelsie for the finale.  Katee certainly deserves to be there.  Will should be there.  Joshua and Twitch are both deserving as well.  Joshua amazes me and Twitch makes me smile.  I think it will be between them.  I really enjoyed Wednesday’s show and I look forward to the finale!

So You Think You Can Dance…

My favorite performances:

Will and Jessica – that amazing piece of moving human sculpture

Joshua and Katee – Baliwood!

Gev and Courtney – hot cha-cha-cha-cha

Mark and Chelsie – I’m a woman!

Gev and Courtney – lost in the jungle

My bottom 3 couples for the evening:

Thayne and Comfort (Just not a great partnership, although they’re separately very good.  And I agree with Nigel on their second number…I would have liked to have seen that done by a different couple.  It had beautiful choreography, but their performance was disappointing.)

Twitch and Kherington (wish it weren’t so – tough set of dances for them this week)

Hmm…hard to choose a third…I’ll say Will and Jessica, just because they’ve been in the bottom before, but I do think their first number is worthy enough to keep them out of the bottom.  We all know Will will not be the one to go.  Might the judges get rid of Thayne and Jessica and see what Will and Comfort could pull off together?  Hmm….

Or, it could be Mark and Chelsie.  They had to go first, which makes them vulnerable of being a little bit forgotten about.

I think Joshua and Katee’s Baliwood number will definitely keep them out of trouble, especially since it was last.

And Gev and Courtney had two fun and well performed numbers, so I would be surprised if they were in the bottom.

Well…there ya go.  My deep thoughts on SYTYCD.  :)

Olympics, SYTYCD

I’ve been DVRing some of the track and field Olympic trials as well as the swimming trials.  This afternoon I got to watch some track trials, which are taking place just two hours away in Eugene.  The men’s 800 meter finals came up and as they introduced each runner we learned there were three Oregonians in the race…Nick Symmonds, Andrew Wheatey (U of O sophomore who just took up track a couple years ago) and Christian Smith.  Throughout the first lap, the whole group of 8 finalists stayed kinda bunched up, but the Oregon men were basically at the back.  It looked like Symmonds was getting a bit boxed in and might get stuck back there if he couldn’t find a hole to jump through and get around the group.  Just in time, with about 150 meters left, he found that hole and began to uncoil with a kick to the finish that put him way out front.  Wheating seemed to feed off of Symmonds’ energy and the feedback from the crowd (which was going wild) and put his 6’5″ frame to good use and pulled up into second.  The battle was on for third place as the top three qualify for the Olympic team.  Not only do you have to finish in the top three, the men must run a qualifying standard time of 1:46.00 at some point in the season, including this race.  Smith was neck and neck with last year’s national champion and they both literally dove for the finish line!  I mean, face plants on the track!  Smith ended up in third place and beat out fourth place by .06 of a second.  He had not met the qualifying time yet, so he needed it to happen in this race, or his third place wouldn’t matter.  He ran a 1:45.47.  He made it by .53 of a second!   Three Oregonians, who also happen to live and train in Eugene, will be our men’s 800 meter team in Beijing.  I’m tellin’ ya…that was some exciting stuff to see!!!!  That Eugene crowd really knows how to energize their runners.  I can’t wait for the Olympics to start!!!

So You Think You Can Dance…

Wow.  Two dances from each team tonight.  And some pretty passionate ones!  Fourteen performances are a lot to rank, so I think I’ll just mention my favorite numbers and then rank the couples.

Joshua and Katee – Mia Michaels routine (Katee with the tall hair)

Mark and Chelsie – Mandy Moore routine (purple and gloves)

Twitch and Kherington – Mia Michaels routine (the bed)

Will and Jessica – Mandy Moore routine (the shirt)

Joshua and Katee – Benji Schwimmer routine (hot pink)

_____

Joshua and Katee – This couple just seems to get whatever is thrown at them.  They’re not over the top.  They seem real and they balance each other.

Mark and Chelsie – This couple has really surprised me.  They work so well together and maybe they’ve just been lucky with choreographers, but they seem to really connect with the movement and with each other so very well.

Twitch and Kherington – This is a great duo.  Great chemistry and storytelling ability.  Very versatile.  Very beautiful.

Will and Jessica – He is phenomenal and is a great partner for her.  She is really good but is missing the extra special something for me.  They’re both beautiful people.

Gev and Courtney – They’re cute and solid and have given very nice performances.  They just don’t draw me in as strongly as some of the others.

Matt and Kourtni – I think they’re both really talented, and tall, and I wonder if I might not like them better as solo dancers than together.  I want to like them more, but their storytelling is not as strong as some of the others.

Thayne and Comfort – I enjoy them, but for some reason, they just don’t stick in my head like some of the others.  They’re at a disadvantage because they’re a new pairing.  Again, I may like them better as solo dancers.

I think Thayne and Kourtni are in the most trouble.  But can you imagine Matt dancing with Comfort?  She would look like a tiny little feather next to him!

SYTYCD

My rankings for Wednesday’s show…

Top 6:

  • Mark and Chelsie
  • Joshua and Katee
  • Twitch and Kherington
  • Will and Jessica
  • Matt and Kourtni
  • Gev and Courtney

Bottom 2:

  • Chris and Comfort
  • Thayne and Chelsea

It’s been interesting that the last two weeks have each seen a complete team dismissed.  I wonder who will be the first to lose a teammate and get paired with a new partner.

That Will has rather tremendous talent, I think.  Mark and Chelsie are great storytellers, as are Joshua and Katee.  Twitch and Kherington are also so likeable and superb dancers.  The judges have been hard on Matt about being too stiff, but I rather like his posture.  I wonder if his height and build make him appear to be more upper body stiff than he really is.  I really enjoy something about all of the dancers, but I won’t comment on them all at this stage.

Even though the dancers don’t want to be in the bottom 3 couples, I enjoy seeing their solos and wish they could be a little longer!

If you’re watching, whom do you like?
